Abstract

Although generative pretrained transformer (GPT) technology is publicly poised to disrupt content marketing, customer service, and the creative fields, the true potential of generative AI is in its capacity to revolutionize enterprise operations by automating mundane, repetitive tasks as well as developer-driven activities such as data mapping and application programming interface (API) development. Organizations should consider the potential of this technology to reduce costs and time-to-market while investing in subject matter experts to refine outputs for accuracy. With proper planning and investment, GPTs can be leveraged to augment skilled labor and address business labor shortages while also eliminating friction and needless busy work from the operational side of enterprise digital commerce.

"Keep an open mind about generative AI. Before you realize it, GPTs may become your ultimate ally in enterprise digital commerce operations," says Heather Hershey, research director, Worldwide Digital Commerce at IDC. "One day, perhaps sooner than we realize, this technology will become table stakes. Until then, consider GPTs the key to automating the tedium of business operations to unlock long-term agility, reduce overhead, accelerate time-to-market, and remove friction from both the operator and client sides of digital commerce.
