Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight highlights part of the results of IDC's Business Automation Survey 2024, which was conducted across the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region in January 2024. The survey results show that only 25% of European organizations have established or plan to establish an automation center of excellence (COE). However, automation projects are growing in complexity as organizations look to scale their business automation efforts in pursuit of operational excellence and an improved customer experience; it is therefore important for organizations to understand what capabilities an automation COE can bring to their own operations. Of the organizations that have already implemented an automation COE, the majority have chosen a hybrid approach where some capabilities of the COE are centralized and some are delegated to business units or "satellites."

"Companies that have not yet implemented an automation COE stand to benefit from understanding how a COE's practices can enable scalable automation initiatives. As automation technologies develop, the functions delegated to COEs are evolving. COEs still have the great responsibility of producing automation solutions but are also increasingly taking on the important role of fostering organization-wide collaboration. In this role, they are promoting best practices, driving greater visibility of successful automation projects, and helping to eliminate the duplication of initiatives." — Elena Semenovskaia, Research Director, European Intelligent Process Automation Systems, IDC EMEA
