Abstract

This IDC study looks at the emerging soft skills virtual reality (VR) training market. This includes what soft skills VR training is, how it is being used, what benefits learners and companies derive from it, and the profiles of companies that are active in this space.

"Virtual reality has long had a presence among consumers as a gaming platform, but only in the recent years, it has crept into the enterprise as a training tool," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director, IDC's Augmented and Virtual Reality team. "With virtual reality, employees can immerse themselves into a virtual environment to interact with virtual characters and experience situations that they could encounter on the job. Depending on the scenario, employees may find themselves in difficult situations and have real-world reactions (i.e., increased heart rate, perspiration, and anxiety over what to do next) while navigating to a solution. With virtual reality, employees can safely make mistakes and practice their skills to improve. And because VR courses can be repeated, enterprises can deploy them at scale."

"VR training lends itself to soft skills training very well," continues Llamas. "Employees are expected to work well with others but are not always equipped with the right or enough training to hone their communication and leadership skills or their understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Soft skills VR training provides a safe and controlled environment to do just that while providing the feedback and analytics to improve. The vendors listed in this IDC MarketScape provide varying levels of content and support for companies to consider."
