Abstract

This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation describes the critical drivers — important external forces — that will alter the global business ecosystem and shape enterprise IT and business strategies for the next 12 to 24 months. IDC's 2023 external drivers incorporate the accelerated and interconnected uncertainty that prevails across the global business landscape. IDC uses the paradigm PESTEL + B — political, economic, social, technological, environmental, legal, and business — to describe the scope of forces included in our annual external drivers review. The 2023 drivers touch on the disruptive effects of geopolitical, economic, and supply chain risk; cybersecurity challenges; digital business; meaningful intelligence; ecosystem-based innovation; the metaverse and Web3; environmental, social, and governance (ESG); work mode upheaval; and the amplifying effects of everything as a service (XaaS).

"As the global winds of change become the storms of disruption, business and technology leaders must prepare to lead for the era of digital business and plan for points of inflection that will impact their strategies for 2023 and beyond," says Joseph Pucciarelli, group vice president of research with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP).
