Abstract

This IDC Market Note discusses some of the initial opportunities and challenges for generative AI large language models (LLMs) in the search and knowledge discovery space. Large language models, including Google's BERT and Microsoft-backed OpenAI's GPT-3, have been used in search and knowledge discovery engines for the past several years, improving natural language understanding (NLU) and question answering capabilities. In late 2022, OpenAI made the latest version of its generative LLM, GPT-3.5, available to the general public via a GPT-3.5-based chatbot, ChatGPT. This release captured mainstream imagination and sparked a wave of rapid development by enterprise and consumer applications such as Snap, Instacart, and Jasper.
