Abstract

5G use cases today and in the near future should garner major considerations for companies that are serious about improving their sustainability profile and reducing environmental impacts. Better current-state insights and the ability to automate and optimize existing operations can be achieved with the robust connectivity and network functionality that comes from the rapidly maturing and expanding network coverage of 5G.

"5G provides a powerful tool to gain insight into the highs and lows of a company's sustainability profile with its ability to support a dense connectivity environs that enables an everything-everywhere-all-the-time-connected approach to emissions/pollution monitoring, resources consumption, and operational efficiency data gathering," says Jason Leigh, research manager for 5g monetization and adoption, IDC. "Although 5G use cases must work in concert with other sustainability and connectivity initiatives, when deployed correctly, they can materially alter a company's environmental impacts and serve as a force multiplier for other initiatives at the company and its vendors to position the company as a strong corporate citizen and force for environmental and climate change improvement,” adds Leigh.
