Abstract

This IDC Perspective analyzes how micromobility vehicles (i.e., personal mobility devices or PMDs such as bicycles, scooters, and mopeds) are changing how people move in cities globally. They can increase efficiency, environmental sustainability, and affordability for short trips in cities. However, challenges such as safety, urban space usage, equality of access, data sharing, and different physical and social realities must be addressed to take full advantage of their potential.

"Micromobility is consolidating. Cities that want to leverage its benefits must understand their business, service, and operating models as well as the strategic role of technology innovation to make emopeds, escooters, and ebikes an integral part of sustainable cities' people and goods mobility," Massimiliano Claps, Research Director, IDC Government Insights.
