Abstract

This IDC study provides 2023 vendor share analysis for the worldwide software change, configuration, and process management market. Revenue growth led to high double-digit revenue growth of 21.3% to reach $8.5 billion, similar to last year's growth (of 21.56% to reach $7.0 billion in 2022).This resulted from expansion on the part of most major vendors across areas of innovation in this broad market, high double-digit and other growth from innovators (such as Atlassian, Microsoft-GitHub, GitLab, JFrog, Harness, Sonatype, LaunchDarkly, CircleCI, Amazon Web Services, and Jama), investment by organizations seeking to optimize execution with GenAI and AI, agile automation and management, and higher DevOps expenditures during 2023 moving into 2024. The ongoing need for collaboration and governance for DevOps enabled by SCCPM will continue to drive growth into 2025–2028. We also observe this in surveys indicating purchase commitments to DevOps tools and related areas of agile, value stream management, augmented by GenAI, AI, and ML with game-changing analytics.

"Flexible work, digitization, and volatility in the world economy with software as a competitive driver created ongoing massive demand in 2023 for effective software management and DevOps efficiency, with high double-digit growth of 21.3% in 2023 to $8.5 billion for the SCCPM market as companies sought to drive innovation and manage complex IT initiatives and evolving AI capabilities," says Melinda Ballou, research director, Agile ALM, Quality, and Portfolio Strategies at IDC. "Colossal growth on the part of key vendors such as Atlassian, Microsoft-GitHub, GitLab, and JFrog, along with other innovators drove high SCCPM adoption. This is the seventh consecutive year of high double-digit growth in this market that expanded significantly. We continue to see acquisitions in this space as the market consolidates. A number of factors will continue to contribute to SCCPM growth, including the strong emergence of GenAI and AI, agile, value stream management, and DevOps environments to help address mobile, cloud, and embedded development and systems engineering. The need to manage complex sourcing along with distributed development, open source, and increased compliance demands that are largely impossible to do without SCCPM. Indeed, we saw high double-digit revenue growth for many vendors targeting these areas, mitigating lower but still solid revenue growth for mainframe solutions as enterprises also engage in application modernization. We expect the continuing push toward multimodal, multiplatform deployments (including mobile, collaborative applications, and those embedded with big data and analytics) to drive ongoing growth in the 2024–2028 period as GenAI, AI and ML functionality, and governance evolve further and mature, as platforms consolidate via acquisition and organic evolution and as platform-as-a-service (PaaS) application life-cycle management (ALM) and DevOps solutions continue to evolve."
