This IDC Market Analysis Perspective provides a snapshot of the worldwide and U.S. market for wearable computing devices — commonly referred to as "wearables" — and looks at the key trends and developments shaping this maturing category.
"The wearables market continues to show positive signs for future growth," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director for IDC's Wearables program. "With a combination of new vendors entering the market, product portfolios broadening and deepening, and a strong appetite among end users, wearables are shedding the 'nice-to-have' tag in favor of the long-coveted 'must-have' title. Still, this does not mean that the wearables market has finished development. On the contrary, while customers still purchase wearable devices for many of the same reasons when the market first began, new enhancements and innovations keep the experience fresh and familiar. The key for vendors is connecting the dots between different use cases and what users can do better."
