Abstract

This IDC Survey provides selected findings from IDC's 2024 Worldwide Digital Infrastructure Sentiment Survey. This document focuses on issues related to infrastructure staffing, skill development, and automation priorities for 2024 and 2025. This survey of 1,129 respondents in North America, Latin America, Asia/Pacific, and Europe was conducted in June 2024 while IT leaders were grappling with how best to support the infrastructure needs of emerging GenAI use cases and making longer-term strategic decisions about infrastructure funding, architecture, and operating models.

Despite expected challenges in supporting the growth of infrastructure scale and complexity in the coming year, only 33% of organizations expect to increase computing and storage infrastructure staff head count. The majority of organizations plan to hold head count steady, or even cut head count, by investing in automation and shifting some workloads to SaaS, cloud, and managed services. Larger companies are most likely to expect automation to improve operational efficiency and minimize the need to increase staff.
