Abstract

This IDC Survey draws on data from IDC's 2024 worldwide Future of Work Survey, highlighting responses from 1,269 professionals across the North America, EMEA, and APAC regions. It covers over 18 industries and respondents from distinct roles including HR, IT, and LOB functions. This survey was designed to understand flexible work trends, challenges faced, and investments made by companies as they enable flexible work.

Research suggests flexible work has become mainstream with over 83% of companies offering high levels of flexibility to their employees. The increased flexibility has resulted in a noticeable productivity boost. However, there are technical, cultural, and security challenges that need to be managed. Companies are using solutions like intelligent digital workplace (IDW) technologies to overcome flexible work challenges and to keep employees engaged and productive.

"Flexible work models have become one of the primary tools to drive productivity and retain skilled talent — especially for IT," said Amy Loomis, research vice president, Future of Work. "The increasing sophistication of AI-enabled software and hardware solutions targeting work transformations will further cement flexible work models for the future."
