Abstract

This IDC Survey presents findings from IDC's 2024 AI and Sustainability Survey (n = 1,390). The survey was fielded in February and March 2024 with the intention of identifying market trends around the adoption and use of AI for sustainability purposes as well as sustainability-related considerations and concerns around the use of AI. Sustainable AI is a top priority for enterprises worldwide, with 68% of organizations currently planning to increase their AI spend for sustainability/ESG purposes.

The survey is segmented into three main sections:

  • General market trends
  • Sustainable AI (focusing on the environmental footprint of the IT infrastructure that is necessary to facilitate AI workloads as well as social/governance-related implications around the use of AI)
  • AI for sustainability (focusing on the use cases for AI-enabled IT solutions that accelerate sustainable transformation)

This IDC Survey features the survey results of "Part 3 — Sustainable AI" with a focus on responsible and ethical AI (social/governance implications). It provides insights from a geographic (macroregional) and industry perspective (for retail, manufacturing, financial services, and energy). Other data cuts and more granular insights (e.g., on other industries or segmentations by company size and function/role) are available via request.
