Abstract

This IDC Survey — taken in the spring of 2024 — focuses on consumer ownership of smartwatches and wristbands. We polled 786 owners of these devices, focusing on which brands they own, which brands they intend to get next, how much they have spent and what they plan to spend, reasons for switching brands, and overall satisfaction.

"The United States smartwatch and wristband market is taking slow steps toward maturity," said Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Wearables team. "That makes it the perfect time to assess where customers are at in their device ownership and what they plan to do next. What we have found is that many are satisfied with their current devices and plan on staying with the same brand, yet there is a small percentage of users who are willing to switch. At the same time, on average, most users have said that they are willing to pay more than what they paid last time for a new device. These give vendors information and incentive to review their offerings and how they stack up against the competition."
