Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight analyzes results from IDC's annual AR/VR Commercial Survey, conducted in June 2024 among 400 IT decision-makers whose companies have adopted augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR) solutions in the United States.

When people think of augmented reality, they typically imagine someone wearing a sophisticated set of smart glasses or a head-mounted display that overlays digital data into their field of view. While this depiction of AR is true, the reality is that the majority of AR solutions being used by businesses in 2024 leverage smartphones and tablets in place of advanced AR headsets. Mobile devices are familiar, practical, affordable, and widely available. As a result, while mobile devices don't allow workers to work handsfree, they excel in leveraging common AR features such as see what I see, training videos, and guided instruction for broader business deployment.

This IDC Survey Spotlight highlights the types of hardware businesses are using for augmented reality and the most common AR features used by businesses.
