"The worldwide mobile phone market — inclusive of smartphones — will remain mostly flat going forward, but that doesn't mean that there are a number of trends and developments underpinning it," said Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Mobile Phones team. "First, worldwide economic recovery has been slow, forcing consumers to reevaluate how soon and often they will replace their devices. This also affects how they choose to purchase their new phones. Second, emerging markets have been the driving force during 1H24 with low-cost devices even as higher priced devices arrive on the market. Finally, artificial intelligence (AI) has only just begun to gain traction to offer conveniences and organize actionable information, refreshing the smartphone experience. Taken together, the worldwide mobile phone market today will look entirely different in just a few short years."
