Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight provides a view on how AI and GenAI can impact knowledge management. The document contains data from IDC's Knowledge Management Solutions Survey, which was completed in July 2024. The overall goal of the survey was to identify how organizations are approaching knowledge management from both an IT and a people/culture perspective. We asked respondents about KM benefits, challenges, deployment, and use cases. The survey includes North American respondents from lower-mid (100-499 employees), upper-mid (500-999), large (1,000-4,999), and very large (1,000+) companies.

"AI and generative AI tools are boosting knowledge management practices by breaking down long-standing barriers. They can address issues like fragmented data silos, manual content creation, and difficulty in measuring tangible benefits. These innovative tools promise to streamline processes, improve knowledge accessibility, and deliver measurable ROI," explained Amy Machado, research manager, Worldwide Content and Knowledge Management Solutions at IDC. "Companies are looking to AI and GenAI to improve knowledge search, recommend content, and help create new content, while identifying missing knowledge and ensuring trust with traceability and employee feedback."
