Abstract

This IDC Survey examines the relationship between the importance of smartphone attributes and the satisfaction that their owners report on those attributes. In the spring of 2024, IDC surveyed 1,979 smartphone owners asking them to rate on a scale of 1 to 5 the importance and satisfaction of 14 different attributes. The results were given on a bar graph for attribute importance and satisfaction separately, and together on a scatterplot graph.

"With the United States smartphone market reaching maturity, smartphone owners have developed their opinions on what on their smartphones works for them," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Mobile Phones team. "Among our survey participants, leading the group are a list of attributes that make the smartphone run, like battery life and connectivity rank high, while others are deemed 'nice to have' like photo editing tools. At the same time, not all their needs are being fulfilled. Battery life, which consistently is ranked as the most important smartphone attribute, showed low satisfaction, presenting vendors with a clear option to focus their attention. Meanwhile, there is a long list of attributes that ranked in between for vendors to continuously improve too."
